Created in 1959, the National Centre for Judicial Studies became the French National School for the Judiciary in 1972. It is located in Bordeaux and has premises in Paris.

Main missions are :
- The organization of examinations
- Initial Training: « student judges »
- The In-service training of judges and public prosecutors

- Bilateral relationships
- International cooperation, assistance for the creation of judicial training institutes
In-service training

All judges and public prosecutors are entitled to a minimum of 5 days’ training per year. This in-service training entitlement is compulsory.

It is organized in the School’s premises in Paris.

An annual online catalogue on the ENM website, adopted each year by the ENM’s Board of Directors and proposed by the head of the school is  addressed to  judges and public prosecutors, who are free to choose their training.
Initial training

The aim of the professionnal training provided by the ENM is to form a corps of competent multi-skilled judges and public prosecutors who are suitable for all posts on the bench as well as in the public prosecution service in first instance courts. 

The judicial functions are :

- «Tribunal de Grande Instance» (regional court judge)
- First Instance Court judge
- Investigating judge
- Juvenile Court judge
- Penal judge / judge appointed to oversee the conditions of a prisoner’s sentence
- Deputy Public Prosecutor
International Department

At an operational and pedagogical level, all ENM departments take part in international activities :

- In initial training : international work for student judges :
- the student judges on the International Major course complete their law firm training period with a 5-week placement in Barristers Chambers in England
exchanges of students, teachers and teaching methods with European judicial schools
- In in-service training : activities allowing meetings between French and foreign judges
- Seminars
- Themed conferences within the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN)
- Within the international department : cooperation work, technical and logistical assistance in over 43 countries mobilizing 169 French experts
